GOLD PLATED 1964 121,xxx Selmer Mark VI Tenor Saxophone
1964 Selmer Mark VI tenor saxophone, s/n 121386. Here is an incredibly rare gold plated and American assembled Mark VI tenor saxophone, from a very desirable vintage. It's hard to say for sure if the gold plating is from the factory, but I'd guess that it's quite possibly original. The engraving shows no signs of buffing and is as deep as an original lacquer horn. The neck is original to the horn and has a matching serial number.
My tech just serviced the horn prior to sale, so it's feeling locked in in all registers. The pads are still in good condition and have a lot of life left. Gold plating a saxophone is an incredibly expensive job, often costing $5000+. It requires a layer of silver plating under the gold plating. My personal alto is gold plated, and the difference between it and a standard model is immense. There is a unique clarity and richness to the sound that the gold plating offers. This is a truly unique horn that I think can stand with just about any other vintage Selmer out there.
