1933 Conn Transitional 10M Tenor Saxophone
1933 Conn Transitional 10M tenor saxophone, s/n 257051. This is a late Conn transitional tenor saxophone that still has offset bell keys. Most Conn serial number guides indicate that the 10M began its production by 260,xxx, so this one was made during the final year of production before Conn moved to the 10M.
Conn transitionals are fantastic horns, and one of my very favorite models. The character of the sound that this horn produces is as good as anything else out there. There's a tremendous amount of warmth and resonance in all registers, and it can absolutely project when you want it to.
The previous owner overhauled the saxophone before I received it, and the pads are still in like new condition. There are metal patches under each thumb rest, which look very well done. I think these were placed here for cosmetic reasons since the thumb rests are considerably smaller than what's found on modern horns. Also, the Bis Bb key has an extension, which is a nice improvement making bis Bb easier to play. The sax doesn't have its original lacquer. It comes in a vintage case that is in good condition.
